William Herschel was the brother of Caroline Herschel and the father of John Frederick William Herschel.

He was a professional musician, composer, and astronomer. In addition to being famous for discovering the planet Uranus, he turned his attention to the stars and was inspired to make an extensive study of the cosmos.
