this page honors Giovanni Domenico (Jean Dominique) Cassini (1625-1712)

neon Saturn number 3

The image is a digital rendering of the rings of Saturn.

G.D. Cassini was the founder of a dynasty of astronomers. His son, Jacques, his grandson, César Françoise, and his great-grandson, Jean Dominique, also made their own discoveries in the field and each served as director of the Paris Observatory.

The photographs that I used as raw materials for the images in this series were taken by the NASA/ESA Cassini spacecraft, which was named in his honor.
